Hold In Lieu Of Procedure Turn means you use a published holding pattern to accomplish the course reversal instead of performing a traditional procedure turn. When a procedure requires turning around to line up with the final approach, you enter the hold at the specified fix and fly one or more circuits to reverse course and then intercept the inbound final approach. The hold “in lieu” of the procedure turn keeps you in protected airspace while you align, and you descend and proceed with the approach according to the chart’s altitude and speed restrictions.
